High-rise apartments deal with large influx of holiday gift packages
Many high-rise apartment buildings throughout New Jersey are forced to find ways to store the large influx of holiday gifts being delivered to their tenants this holiday season.
Half Moon Harbour in North Bergen and other nearby high-rises say that they are sometimes doubling as a warehouse and delivery service due to the large amount of packages that are coming in. Many times these packages are not delivered directly to the door of the tenant, and are stored in the building's office.
"This year and last year alone, it feels like we need another extra room to put the packages," says Half Moon Harbour Leasing Manager Varnette Tetterton.
Packages are stored and organized, but building officials say they can't be kept too long.
"We can't really hold packages because we have a large volume so we try to move them out for the next day because we know we're going to get bombarded with more packages," says concierge Felipe Melendez.
Management at Half Moon Harbour say the best way tenants can help is to pick up their packages quickly. They often send emails to their tenants to remind them about packages.
Online sales are expected to increase 7 to 10 percent over last year, according to the National Retail Federation. That's as much as $117 billion.
