New numbers show an alarming trend regarding Hepatitis B and C, specifically in Northern New Jersey.

Officials in West Milford want more people to know how to prevent the spread of Hepatitis B and C, as the number of cases goes up. Since 2010, the number of people infected in the town has doubled.

Both diseases are transmitted through direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids or through close contact with an infected person. They can also be spread through body piercing, tattooing, unprotected sex, and dirty needles.

Officials believe the rise in Hepatitis cases can be traced back to an increase in recreational drugs.

Symptoms of Hepatitis C include abdominal pain, nausea, and flu-like symptoms. Hepatitis C is treatable, but there is no known cure.
