A case of tuberculosis was confirmed at Irvington High School earlier this month, according to the Rutgers Tuberculosis Center.

Program manager Mark Wolman tells news 12 New Jersey that one person at the high school tested positive for the illness.

Other people at the school are also being tested as a precaution.

Tuberculosis is caused by a bacteria that usually attacks the lungs.

The illness is contagious and is spread through the air from one person to another. But health officials say that it takes prolonged exposure to an infected person to contract the illness. Tuberculosis is not spread by shaking someone’s hand, sharing food or kissing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

Symptoms may include a bad cough that lasts three weeks or longer, pain in the chest and coughing up blood.

New Jersey health officials held an informational meeting for Irvington parents Tuesday evening about the incident at the high school.
