Haskell Invitational expected to bring record crowds
When Triple Crown-winner American Pharoah races at Sunday's Haskell Invitational race at Monmouth Park racetrack, approximately 80,000 people are expected to watch.
Although the majority of Monmouth Park is general admission, reserved seats sold out months ago. Although thousands of spectators are expected to arrive, Monmouth Park says there will not be an attendance cap. Anyone who wants to come will be admitted.
"You show up, you're coming in," says Monmouth Park spokesman John Heims. "Parking will be first come, first serve. The earlier you come, the closer to the building you're going to get."
General admission into the park will cost $6, but spectators paying that will most likely be sitting out in the blistering sun.
With reserved seating already sold out, many are turning to ticket websites, where tickets were already going for over $50.
The park is anticipating record attendance. Roads will be closed and detoured in the area and New Jersey transit has announced extra trains.
Monmouth Park has also announced a $750,000 purse increase for their signature race, with $1.1 million going to the winner. This is up from $600,000.
