Gun reform advocates from across the country are calling on lawmakers to put into place new rules to help curb gun violence after two deadly mass shootings over the weekend.
Some advocates from New Jersey were part of a demonstration in Washington, D.C. this weekend. They were at a conference of nearly 2,000 gun control advocates with the group Moms Demand Action when they heard about the shooting in El Paso.
New Jersey resident Reba Holley was in attendance. She says after word got out of the shooting, many in the group marched down to the White House.
"I think we're at a crossroads. I think we're finally going to get there. I think people understand this can't keep going,” she says.
Moms Demand Action is a national group that was founded following the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. Members of the group were in Trenton Monday to watch Lt. Gov. Shelia Oliver sign a package of bills requiring hospitals to provide counseling to gun violence victims.
Theresa Turner of Moms Demand Action says this weekend's bloodshed only deepens the group's resolve to put an end to gun violence.
“When we feel discouraged we have to remember that states like New Jersey since Sandy Hook have passed incredibly strong gun laws,” Turner says.
Turner says that many group members who didn’t join the protest march to the White House Saturday, instead converged on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial to call for nonviolence.
