Gov. Phil Murphy will review a bill to legalize sports wagering that was passed unanimously by the New Jersey State Assembly and Senate.
The bill will allow casinos and racetracks in New Jersey to offer sports betting. The final version of the bill was amended at the last minute to allow casino owners who also own professional sports teams to take bets.
State Sen. Ray Lesniak was instrumental in the fight to get sports betting legalized in the Garden State. He brought the fight to the U.S. Supreme Court, which recently ruled in New Jersey’s favor to rescind the ban on sports wagering.
“I started this crusade 10 years ago. I fought along with Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, and we finally got this victory for the people of New Jersey…I’m looking forward to placing the first bet on the Giants to win the Super Bowl,” Lesniak said.
Taxes from sports wagering are expected to go toward Gov. Murphy’s 2019 state budget.
