Gov. Christie to block changes to gun laws
Gov. Chris Christie says he will block legislative changes to the state's gun permitting process.
At a news conference Thursday, Gov. Christie said he will block changes that include modifying the definition of justifiable need.
The change would give the state broader authority to restrict access to those trying to get guns based on a broader definition of what constitutes a serious threat.
"What the bill is trying to do is simple. It's trying to set up a mechanism to ensure guns are immediately surrendered by those known to be abusers. Domestic violence is a serious crime, it's an epidemic in this country, more so in state of New Jersey," said Assemblywoman Gabriela Mosquera.
The legislation would also require that the known abusers permits and ID cards be suspended or revoked.
Meanwhile, Smith and Wesson released a statement saying it is selling more guns than ever.
Quarterly firearms sales rose more than 22 percent from the same period last year.
The report was based on sales through April 30, more than a month before Sunday's mass shooting in Orlando, Florida.
More sales are expected due to the mass shooting and also because of buyers that fear they will not be able to buy guns as gun control legislation is threatened.
