Gottheimer defeats Rep. Garrett in 5th Congressional District
Democrat Josh Gottheimer has been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for New Jersey's 5th Congressional District.
Gottheimer beat out incumbent Republican Rep. Scott Garrett who has been in the House since 2003.
Gottheimer was projected to win the race. He raised more than $4 million in contributions, doubling Garrett's contributions, according to the Federal Election Commission. Gottheimer is a former Clinton speechwriter.
Rep. Garrett took some heat last year for comments he allegedly made about gay candidates.
Gottheimer and his campaign celebrated at the Hilton Hotel in Hasbrouck Heights.
Garrett for Congress issued this statement, "I would like to thank everyone that supported our campaign - from the voters to the volunteers and campaign staff that dedicated their time and energy to this effort. While the results of this election were not what I had hoped for, I am proud of the race we ran - we stayed the course and kept the faith. We are charged to pray for our nation's leaders, and we are doing that now."
Editor's Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Rep. Garrett has been in the House since 2013.
