High-tech gadgets and gizmos to help towns ?go green? were all the rage this week at the New Jersey League of Municipalities Convention in Atlantic City.

Municipal leaders learned about different items and programs that can help their towns and cities be more environmentally friendly. Everything from solar-powered trash compactors to pollution reducers were featured at the convention. The municipal officials also packed a seminar to learn about getting ?green? programs started.

Some municipalities already have green programs in place. Jersey City and Perth Amboy run flashing traffic lights with solar panels. There are also illuminated street signs being tested in Atlantic City.

Municipal officials also had the opportunity to learn how to apply for federal grants to offset high initial expenses associated with going green.
