Friend hopes to raise funds for child who drowned's funeral
A family friend of a 2-year-old who drowned in Berkeley Township earlier this week is trying to raise money for the toddler's funeral.
Denise Capizzi is trying to get funds to pay for 2-year-old Maddigan McCarthy's funeral because her parents are not able to afford the services.
Authorities say the little girl got through a gap in a neighbor's fence and drowned in their pool Monday at around 8:30 p.m. Capizzi says there was no fence around the pool at the time of the incident.
"There was nothing to stop her," Capizzi says.
News 12 New Jersey attempted to speak with the owners of the pool, but they did not wish to speak to reporters. Police have not said if they would face any charges related to the incident.
According to Capizzi, Maddigan's mother Brigitte McCarthy had just finished giving the girl a bath. Her father, Rob Trella, put the girl on the couch to watch TV while he did laundry. Police are working to determine exactly how the toddler got out of the home.
Law enforcement sources tell News 12 New Jersey that marijuana and heroin were found inside the home. The two other children who lived at the home have been removed by child services. Bridgette McCarthy has been hospitalized and Rob Trella is facing charges for allegedly trying to destroy a joint as evidence.
Capizzi says that she hopes the community will come together to raise enough funds to give Maddigan a proper funeral.
The Maddigan McCarthy-Trella Fund has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank. Any branch will accept donations.
