Flight prices skyrocket as Irma advances on the U.S.
As Hurricane Irma advances on the United States, many are finding that the costs of flights out of Florida have greatly increased.
The storm is currently barreling over the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and could make landfall Sunday in southern Florida.
“A storm of this size can affect statewide and everyone should be prepared,” said Florida Gov. Rick Scott. “This is life-threatening.”
But people have been finding out that flights out of the state are costing about $500 more than tickets normally cost.
“It’s been around $250 on average and it’s upwards of $500 - $700 right now if you can get a flight at all,” says New Jersey AAA manager Marianna Meyers.
News 12 New Jersey found that a one-way United Airlines ticket from Fort Lauderdale to Newark on Friday costs $760. That flight also costs $1,000 to leave Thursday, but it was no longer available.
Jet Blue Airlines was doing customers a favor by capping prices at $99.
The New Jersey AAA call center says that it received 200 more calls Tuesday and Wednesday than it would normally get.
Meyers says that travelers should cancel travel plans. Many airlines have waived cancellation fees for the time being. She also says that cruise lines like Royal Caribbean are offering either full refunds or credit toward another trip.
