Fishing boat rescued off NJ coast
An intense rescue made by the United States Coast Guard was caught on camera.
According to the Coast Guard, fishing boat The Navigator was 20 miles off the Manasquan Inlet when a mechanical problem caused the boat to start taking on water.
Nick Ameen, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard, says a good Samaritan saw the boat in distress and alerted the Guard.
"It was a fishing boat by the name of the Nemesis," he says. "They happened to be in the area at the right place and time, and they let the right people know."
The U.S. Coast Guard deployed its helicopter from Atlantic City. A crew from the Coast Guard's Point Pleasant station also took to the water searching for the distressed vessel in a 47-foot motorized lifeboat.
Navigator deckhand Matt Hydro says the water on the boat was knee-deep and that the three-person crew had to bail out the water using 5-gallon buckets.
"It was a scary situation, but luckily everything worked out," Hydro says.
The Coast Guard brought two industrial-size pumps to remove the water from the Navigator, and it was towed back to the marina.
No one was injured during the ordeal.
