An eight-alarm fire that tore through five buildings has left nearly 60 people homeless in Union City, and investigators say a man's body was removed from the site tonight.
Fire officials say the fire started in the basement of 2103 Bergenline Ave. at around 9 p.m. last night and quickly spread.
Deputy Chief Mike Cranwell, of North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, says the fire was brought under control this morning. Thirteen firefighters were hurt while fighting the flames.
Town officials say nearly 60 people were evacuated from their homes and taken to a nearby high school.
The man who was removed from the structure has not yet been identified. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
