Local fire crews underwent special training on Saturday in Sayreville to learn more about water and ice rescues.
The Sayreville fire chief says rescuing people from icy lakes and ponds can be just as dangerous as fire rescues.
Crews from the Sayreville Fire Department and other departments across the state attended the training at Kennedy Park.
The training took about 20 hours and included learning in the classroom as well as getting into the freezing water.
