An overnight fire damaged or destroyed the businesses inside a Fair Lawn strip mall on Friday – including a popular bakery.
The fire tore through several stores on Fair Lawn Avenue at Chandler Drive.
The assistant fire chief confirmed the fire began in the Green Dragon restaurant and then quickly spread through the strip mall. The Green Dragon’s roof collapsed during the fire.
Several stores were destroyed, including the popular Zadies Bakery, which just recovered after a car drove through its
front window in 2019.
The owner of Zadies told News 12 New Jersey that he is assessing the situation and is glad his overnight staff was not harmed. Zadies ownership tells News 12 they hope to be able to reopen somewhere soon.

Fair Lawn Roadhouse is also among the damaged businesses. According to Stell Lemberg, president of the Fair Lawn Chamber of Commerce, the American restaurant Nuts had its soft opening a couple of months ago. They were planning a ribbon-cutting for August or September.
“I know that they have insurance and they’re going to start going through the process, but sometimes having the community tell you that we’re here and we love you and you’re part of us, is really important for them to know,” said Lemberg.
Flynn’s Barbershop, which faced its own challenges opening during the COVID-19 pandemic, just put down a fresh coat of paint. Co-owner Jess Flynn got a late-night call alerting her of the fire.
“I raised my son there. My dog comes to work every day there,” said Flynn. “I’m just heartbroken and devastated. Literally everything in there, me and my husband did by ourselves.”
Flynn said she went to barber school to help her husband with their family business because they were having difficulty finding barbers to work during the pandemic.
She was told her beloved barbershop was a total loss.
“I was hoping that some stuff would be OK, but they said probably nothing was going to be saved,” said Flynn.
Fair Lawn officials say no injuries were reported in the fire. The cause was not immediately known.
