A FedEx driver’s quick thinking is being credited for saving a man’s life after he flipped his car in South Brunswick.

South Brunswick police say that Dean Vitale, 24, was driving on Ridge Road in South Brunswick around 8:30 p.m. Thursday when he swerved to avoid another car and lost control. Police say that his car flew into the air and hit a sign.

The crash caused the car to flip over and catch fire. FedEx driver Anthony Lanza saw it happen and was able to pull Vitale to safety without waiting for police to arrive.

“I drive around every day. I see accidents and he was in need of my help…I try to do the right thing,” Lanza says.

After pulling Vitale to safety, Lanza says he then got a fire extinguisher from his truck and put the fire out himself.

“I just did what I hope someone could do if I was in the same situation, I would hope someone would do it for me,” Lanza says.

Police say that Lanza prevented the crash from becoming a tragedy. They say that their first officer arrived on scene in less than a minute but they also admit in this case seconds counted and Lanza's actions made up for those seconds.

Vitale was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries was not immediately released.
