Federal judge in Trenton ships animal activists to prison for Web intimidation
(09/12/06) TRENTON ? Three animal rights activists convicted of using the Internet to incite threats and harassment received federal prison sentences between four and six years in Trenton Tuesday.
Each activist is a member of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, or SHAC. Some members of the group were convicted in March of using the Web to encourage intimidation against Huntingdon Life Sciences, a company that performs animal testing. Government prosecutors say members posted names, addresses, phone numbers and other personal information of Huntingdon employees and those who do business with the company on the Internet.
Kevin Kjonaas of Minnesota received six years in prison, Lauren Gazzola of Connecticut received over four years and Jacob Conroy of California received four years. Three others have yet to be sentenced for their role in the plot. None of the defendants apologized when given the opportunity to speak in the courtroom. All three must also pay restitutions to those affected by the harassment.
