LAVALLETTE - A firehouse that doubled as a senior citizens center and was badly damaged by Sandy will soon be able to serve the community again, thanks to a donation from a local charity.
The meeting room has been sitting empty for more than eight months, waiting for repairs. Waves for Water has purchased the supplies and Home Depot is donating the labor to rebuild the room.
The firehouse also suffered massive damage and lost life-saving equipment.

The repairs will be a welcome sign of recovery. As many as 60 Ocean County senior citizens would come to the firehouse every day for meals. The fire company is hoping to be able to welcome them back in September.
The department will do fundraisers to cover replacement costs for equipment and other furnishings lost in the storm.
