ORTLEY BEACH - A family displaced by Sandy was welcomed back to their Third Avenue home by more than 100 volunteers who rebuilt it.

Volunteer efforts were organized by the "Paying It Forward Foundation", a nonprofit group.

The home belongs to Michael and Audrey Gavala and their daughter Denise.

Michael Gavala, a Marine veteran, suffered a stroke 19 years ago and requires full-time care, so rebuilding on their own was impossible.

Volunteers helped rebuild the home along with neighbors and other Sandy survivors. The volunteers rebuilt the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen.

A wheelchair ramp was reconstructed by college students from New York during their spring break.

"Paying It Forward Foundation" has provided help with reconstruction to hundreds of homeowners on the barrier island.
