SEASIDE HEIGHTS - Work began today on the removal of the Jet Star roller coaster from the Atlantic Ocean.
Hurricane Sandy relocated the coaster from a Seaside Heights pier to the ocean almost 200 days ago.
Since then, the coaster has become a symbol of Sandy's destruction.

A barge has pulled up along the Casino Pier and begun dismantling the metal structure. The process will continue around the clock and is expected to be completed in three days.
The company contracted to do the work, Weeks Marine, will also remove other debris from the ocean floor to make it safe for swimming and boating again.
Residents and visitors have stopped by the site to take final pictures and video before the coaster is gone.
Although Seaside Heights doesn't own the coaster, it's hoping to garner a piece in order to preserve its impact on the town's history.
