BRICK - Sand washed into the Barnegat Bay by Sandy is being brought back to the beach in Brick.

A state contractor was hired to replenish the beach by loading sand from the bay onto barges, sift it for debris, and bring it back to shore.

Officials say the sand was tested for contaminants and came back clean, even though it has a dark appearance. It will be tested a second time once it is placed back on the beach. If at any time the tests come back positive, it will be brought to a landfill.

So far, crews have not had to remove any of the sand. Contractors say the sand will get lighter over time.

Brick is the first Shore town to have the beach work done. Other towns are scheduled for replenishment over the next six to 12 months.
