LEONARDO - Many Shore towns have come a long way since Sandy, while others are still devastated and vulnerable to this season's storms.

More than seven months since Sandy, parts of the Leonardo section of Middletown Township are still covered with debris, closed to traffic and dangerous.

On the shore, the dunes are gone, exposing the bulkhead underneath.

"If we had another storm like that there's nothing to prevent it from going up the road," says resident Betsy Alverson.

The town says privately owned beachfronts that require easements to reconstruct the dunes are holding up the process.

Township Administrator Anthony Mercantante says working with FEMA has been a slow process, and officials are trying to use federal aid rather than using taxpayer money.
