NJ announces post-Sandy loan, grant programs

TRENTON - (AP) - Governor Chris Christie wants to use the first allocation of post-Superstorm Sandy federal government grants to help rebuild hard-hit homes and businesses.

Officials in Christie's administration told The Associated Press on Tuesday the plan would give homeowners grants for fixing storm-damaged houses, give businesses no-interest loans to stay afloat and give landlords incentives to rent to low-income people.

Most of the programs are similar to what other states have done with federal aid after disasters. But unlike in other states, Christie wants his administration to run all the programs rather than farming them out to local governments.

There will be a week for the public to comment on the plan, which needs federal approval.

The $1.8 billion federal grant is expected to arrive in April.
