KEANSBURG - A dog lost just after Sandy struck the Jersey Shore has been reunited with his family 15 months later.

Chuck and Elicia James of Keansburg say they gave up all hope of ever seeing their pit bull mix again after he escaped their yard through a Sandy-damaged fence.

They decided it was time to get a new dog and went to the Monmouth County SPCA. That's when something amazing happened.

"The first dog we came up to turned out to be Reckless, our dog," says Chuck James. "We both teared up like right away... He's a lot heavier. I didn't recognize him at first. I was, 'Hey, that dog looks like Reckless,' and my wife is like, 'That dog is Reckless.'"

They provided pictures to prove Reckless was theirs.

The couple was displaced by Sandy and are now staying at a hotel.

The Monmouth County SPCA says it picked up the dog as a stray six months ago.
