EDISON - The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs has filed fraud actions against three contractors it says took advantage of homeowners recovering from Superstorm Sandy, including one that was questioned by Kane in Your Corner a year ago after complaints from News 12 New Jersey viewers.

The fraud complaint alleges Shore House Lifters of Point Pleasant, and Atlantic Coast House Lifting and George Rex Construction, both of Pleasantville, received over $1.5 million in grant money from Sandy homeowners to rebuild and elevate damaged homes. The Division of Consumer Affairs alleges the contractors “failed to compete projects,” did work in a “substandard manner” and sometimes even “abandoned elevation projects” while homes were still in the air. The state seeks to have the people involved in those companies banned from working in the home improvement field in New Jersey in the future.

Susan and Brian Poehler were among the homeowners who complained to Kane In Your Corner about Shore House Lifters in early 2016. The Poehlers had hired the company based on its promise of “turnkey service,” but six months and more than $82,000 into the project, they had lost patience with slow progress and what they considered shoddy work.

Shore House Lifters is no longer in business. Phone numbers Kane In Your Corner once used to reach their owners were no longer in service. But a year ago, the company insisted it was being blamed for systemic problems that plagued Sandy contractors statewide.

The state has now taken civil action against seven Sandy contractors.
