A Brooklyn man is dead following a residential fire early Monday morning.
Officials responded to a building fire inside of 844 Midwood St., and found a 69-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive after extinguishing the fire. Police have identified the victim as Wayne Davis.
EMS transported Davis to NYC Health & Hospitals/Kings County where he was pronounced dead.
Residents of the East Flatbush co-op where the fire took place are grieving the loss of their neighbor.
"Wayne is a very nice person," said a resident of the Harry Silver Co-ops mourning the loss of Davis. "I'm devastated because this is something that could've been prevented. It hurts my heart."
Residents say that the issues with the building are now being brought to light after the fatal fire.
Right now, the building has 43 open violations on the Department of Housing Preservation and Development's website, dating back decades.
Jay Williams, president of the co-op's management company, says some of the violations still up on HPD's website have been cleared but remain on the site.
The fire marshal is still determining the cause of the fire.
