The FDA is warning people to avoid eating romaine lettuce after an E. coli outbreak sickened 32 people in 11 states, including three in New Jersey.
The agency says that other people became sick in California, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio and Wisconsin.
The FDA is also working with officials in Canada, where people are being warned to stay away from romaine lettuce.
The strain identified is different than the one linked to romaine earlier this year, but it appears similar to one linked to leafy greens last year.
The FDA says that of the 32 people reported with the illness, 13 have been hospitalized. But the agency says that no deaths have occurred.
Most E. coli bacteria are not harmful, but some produce toxins that can cause severe illness. Symptoms of E. coli often include severe stomach cramps and bloody diarrhea.
More information about the outbreak can be found at the FDA’s website.
