A woman was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Metuchen Thursday, suspending rail traffic for hours.

Authorities say the accident happened around 8 a.m., and train service was restored on the Northeast Corridor line later in the morning.

Hours before, New Jersey Transit Police were hard at work in Montclair getting word out about track safety. They handed out fliers showing what happens when people don't pay attention to posted signs and railroad warnings.

Some Montclair residents say they see people running across train tracks all the time. ?Of course I've seen it,? Carolyn Nelson says. ?Many times the train can even be there and someone will get out of their car and race around the front.?

There is no word on why the victim was on the tracks.
