Farmingdale bar continues NFL boycott on Super Bowl Sunday
A Monmouth County bar stuck to a controversial protest on Super Bowl Sunday, even though it meant losing money.
Woody's Roadside Tavern in Farmingdale shut down at 5 p.m. Sunday as part of a boycott of the NFL that owner Chris Maltese says has continued since Veteran's Day.
Maltese says veterans that visited the bar on Veteran's Day weekend requested the bar shut off the games, a reaction stemming from the National Anthem protests that have occurred across the league.
The bar owner says that Sunday was such a big day for the bar that they decided to keep the games off their screens all season long.
Woody's has had Super Bowl parties in the past, but this year the bar will stand its ground on a big money-making day.
"We grappled with that for a while, but we thought it was absolutely the right thing to do," says Maltese. "We will take a little bit of a financial hit, but it's a small sacrifice compared to what the people we are trying to honor really gave up."
