The family of a Monmouth County man murdered in 2015 must remove a memorial they constructed in his honor.
William “Billy” Karecki’s family has until Friday to remove the memorial to make way for a splash park being built in Aberdeen.
Karecki was shot and killed in the Cliffwood Beach section of town. His family built the memorial near the location where he was killed to honor him and to call attention to the fact that his murder has not been solved.
Mayor Fred Tagliarini initially said that the memorial could stay up for another two weeks, but Aberdeen Council members overrode his decision. Tagliarini says that he wants to help the family construct a permanent memorial.
“Probably the worst thing to happen is a parent to lose a child,” he says. “We are very sympathetic to them and we want to do something… [We] should be able to give them something to last a lifetime.”
Tagliarini says that he will help the family raise funds for a permanent tree or bench memorial somewhere in the park that conforms to the township’s guidelines.
