Escort service in Spitzer scandal operated out of NJ
The international prostitution ring allegedly used by New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer operated out of New Jersey.
The escort service at the center of the scandal, the Emperor's Club VIP, was based in the 12th floor of a Cliffside Park high rise.
Prosecutors believe 62-year-old Mark Brener was the mastermind behind the Emperor?s Club VIP. According to prosecutors, Brener gained a lot of money from December 2004 to January 2008 when he and Cecil Suwal, 23, laundered more than $1 million through the operation. Authorities say Suwal controlled the bank accounts for the operation and was in charge of hiring prospective prostitutes to join.
Both Brener and Suwal were arrested last week for allegedly running the operation.
Spitzer's political life now hangs in the balance as he reportedly plans to resign. The governor is accused of paying $4,300 to a prostitute who worked for the Emperor's Club VIP.
A law enforcement official told the Associated Press that Spitzer came under suspicion due to large cash payments made from several bank accounts to the prostitution ring. The governor was also allegedly tracked using court-ordered wiretaps that appear to have recorded him arranging for a prostitute to meet him at a Washington hotel in mid-February.
Republicans in the state Legislature say they will move to impeach Spitzer if he doesn't resign in the next 24-48 hours.
Associated Press wire reports contributed to this story.
