(AP) - Authorities say a Newark man has beenfatally shot by an Essex County sheriff's officer during anundercover drug buy.
The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the city's SouthWard.
An Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokesman said theplainclothes officer approached the suspect to make a drug buy anda struggle ensued. The officer fired his weapon once, hitting thesuspect in the side.
He was handcuffed and taken to University Hospital where he waspronounced dead an hour later.
The suspect is identified as 23-year-old Amar McLean.
The officer, a 17-year veteran who was not identified, wastreated for minor injuries.
Prosecutor's spokesman Paul Loriquet said about $4,000 worth ofheroin was found on the suspect.
