The trip home after the long Memorial Day weekend began in the Garden State as drivers took to the road slightly later in the afternoon this year.
Highways like the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway filled up later in the day, as many stayed at their holiday destinations to make the most out of the beautiful New Jersey weather.
"We knew there was no beating it no matter when we left," says Rebecca Okin, of Long Island. "So we figured we'd enjoy the beginning of the day and just leave in the afternoon like we did. "
Beachgoers and barbecuers headed back home told News 12 New Jersey that traffic was about what was expected.
