Drivers apathetic as gas prices continue to climb
(04/21/08) RIDGEFIELD ? Gas prices are going through the roof, but drivers in New Jersey don?t think there?s much they can do about the situation.
?I don?t know what to do about it really,? says Rockaway resident Mike Lopardo. ?I mean, it?s going to be like $4 a gallon pretty soon so I guess we just have to live with it, but I wish there was something we could do.?
Drivers nationwide are going through the same thing. According to a survey, gas has jumped 16 cents in the last two weeks. The average for a gallon of gas in the U.S. is $3.47, according to the survey.
Truck drivers have been hit especially hard with diesel prices spiking to $4.21, up $1.24 from the same time one year ago. Truckers say it costs them about $1,000 a week just to make local deliveries.
Perhaps in response to the gas crunch, sales of hybrids rose 38 percent last year, according to the Associated Press. In addition, overall vehicle sales dropped 3 percent.
With all the talk of gas prices going up, residents may be interested to know that the cheapest gas in New Jersey can be found at a BP on Communipaw and West Side avenues in Jersey City. According to NewJerseygasprices.com, that station is selling gas for $3.11 for a gallon of regular.
