Dolphin found dead in Navesink River
A young dolphin was found dead Wednesday morning in the Navesink River.
The dolphin was discovered on the beach at the end of De Normandie Avenue in Fair Haven. Marine mammal rescue workers think the animal was part of a wayward pod of bottlenose dolphins that were spotted in the river on Father's Day.
Jim Cerroti, the owner of the Fair Haven Yacht Works marina, and his dock manager, Mark Modderman, found the bottlenose dolphin on the river bank near their business.
"To actually walk up on the beach and see it dead was very upsetting," Modderman says.
Officials at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center say they want to use electronic sound devices to lure the dolphins back out to sea. The dolphins made a wrong turn at Sandy Hook Bay in June and have been in the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers ever since.
But the center needs approval from the National Marine Fisheries Service before it can help.
"I hope this is a wake-up call to the Fisheries Service that time for discussion is over and it's time to act," says Robert Schoelkopf, the center's director.
