Dozens of dogs rescued from shelters impacted by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana have arrived in New Jersey.

Many of the dogs were scheduled to come to New Jersey even before the storm hit, but the schedule was moved up because of the storm. Rescuers say that their adoptions will help other animals in the storm-ravaged region down South.

“Let’s get those animals up here safe, let’s get them homes, let’s get them rescued where they can be safe up here so that we have that space for the animals [in Texas],” says Southern Paws founder Ashley Gardenier.

Ringwood-based Southern Paws is a rescue group that specializes in transporting animals north from southern states where there is a higher rate of euthanization of shelter pets.

Another transport is already on its way down south to pick up more animals. The animals should be in New Jersey by the end of the week.

“We're doing it because we love the animals and we see the conditions and I think we continue to do it because when something like this hits they become part of a family,” says volunteer Tami-Jo Faller.
