Dogs rescued from Howell hoarding case on the mend; owners to be charged
The nearly 300 dogs rescued from what is being called an "extreme hoarding situation" in Howell Township have begun their road to recovery.
Officials rescued 276 dogs from the home on Bennet Road Friday. Several of the dogs rescued have since given birth to puppies.
Volunteers have been coming to the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown to foster some of the dogs and help with socialization prior to adoption.
"The biggest problem is that they're shocked," says Monmouth County SPCA Police Chief Ross Licitra. "They've never had any contact with humans or ever been out of their house before. They've never been walked on a leash."
Many of the dogs could be seen shaking or hiding. One Yorkie mix dog is recovering after having one of her legs amputated. Officials say that it was broken for some time and left untreated.
Since the story of the rescue broke, donations for the dogs have been pouring in from the community. SPCA officials have had to begin putting items in a storage overflow container. People have donated cleaning supplies, dog food, dog crates and linens.
The SPCA says that it is seeking monetary donations to help with veterinary costs. Dog groomers interested in volunteering are also in demand.
Chief Licitra says that a meeting is scheduled for later this week with multiple agencies to decide how to charge the owners. A mental health processional will also be consulted.
"We're not out to put these people in jail," he says. "We're looking to bring help to them."
News 12 New Jersey reached out to the owners for comment, but no one answered the door.
