As the cases of coronavirus continue to spread, doctors are advising residents to be proactive by boosting their immune system.
Dr. Deena Adimoolam of Mount Sinai in New York City says people can't forget about strengthening their own barrier against the virus.
"We believe that the normal person with a normal immune system who test positive will likely be able to mount a response to the coronavirus and survive," she says. "And we believe that 80% of the population will have some mild symptoms and overcome the virus."
Adimoolam says there are different ways to strengthen immune systems to help fight back against the coronavirus or any other pathogen.
"Make sure you are practicing stress reduction, exercise if you can, sleep and make sure you are eating healthy," Adimoolam says.
She says if a person's immune system is compromised that it's important for them to continue taking medications to help support underlying medical issues. Those who have diabetes should focus on diet to keep their blood sugar at a normal level and well controlled.
In addition, doctors are urging people to prevent the spread of coronavirus by practicing simple hygiene practices like washing their hands, using hand sanitizer and staying home if they are sick.
