Many beaches in Ocean and Monmouth counties were cited yesterday due to high bacteria levels.
According to the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), 22 beaches in Ocean and Monmouth counties tested in excess of bacteria standards, forcing two to close for the day.
The DEP blames runoff from recent rain that carried into the rivers, bay and ocean for contributing to the high bacteria levels. Neither of the beaches marked in excess of the bacteria standard pose health risks, according to officials.
According to the DEP website, two beaches in Ocean County remain closed to swimming. They are both "river beaches." All advisories in Monmouth County have been lifted.
