Deadline to register to vote on Election Day in New Jersey passes
Any New Jersey resident who is still unregistered to vote has missed their chance to participate in the November 2016 election.
The deadline to register to vote in the state was Tuesday, Oct. 18. Many registration centers were open until 9 p.m. for those who still needed to register.
Officials say there have been 30,000 new registered voters in New Jersey since May. Those officials credit the large numbers to a new Motor Vehicle Commission program that asks people if they want to register to vote while conducting other business.
News 12 New Jersey visited the Bergen County Commissioner of Registration Tuesday morning and saw the office was inundated with people registering to vote, including a woman who just became an American citizen Monday.
"It's my responsibility and every vote counts I think. If we want change, then we have to vote," says Marea Green.
Meanwhile, the New Jersey Board of Elections says it has seen no evidence of voter fraud and is not concerned the system is rigged.
Ten of New Jersey's 21 county elections officials responded to inquiries made by The Associated Press and said they have seen no evidence of fraud.
Gov. Chris Christie in August said the public trusts the system.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has been making claims that balloting in the U.S. is rigged.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
