The city Department of Design and Construction is set to begin a three-year project to upgrade water main pipes in the vicinity of Flatbush and Sixth avenues and their surrounding streets.

The work will include the installations of sewers, catch basins and manholes. There are also plans to reconstruct the Eighth Avenue triangle by Grand Army Plaza.

Crews will first build test pits to check for the locations of existing underground infrastructure, before they begin installing the new pipes and sewer systems.

Once the work begins, communities can expect street closures and parking restrictions. The DDC has promised to keep residents up to date on its activities.

"This project is a large investment in the community that will ensure the long-term reliability of critical water and sewer infrastructure," a DDC spokesperson said in a statement. "At the completion of infrastructure work streets will be fully restored curb-to-curb."

The project is expected to be completed in 2021.
