A 25-doctor team at Danbury Hospital helped remove one of the largest ovarian tumors on record in the northeastern United States.

The patient, a 38-year-old woman who wishes to remain anonymous, could not eat because the tumor had grown so large.

She gained about 10 pounds a week for two months, doctors say. When they removed the tumor, it weighed 132 pounds and was 100 centimeters across.

It was not cancerous.

The five-hour surgery took place on Valentine's Day.

"She is lucky because it was caught right on time," says Dr. Vaagn Andikyan, of the Western Connecticut Health Network. "I'm not sure she would have survived an extra week or two."

Doctors say she has since made a full recovery and is looking forward to spending Mother's Day with her family.

They say they are not sure what made the tumor grow so rapidly.
