Some Little Leagues in Nassau may be left scrambling to find a place to play after County Executive Laura Curran decided to charge sports and other organizations fees to use county parks.
This year, the Seaford Little League was slapped with a $16,000 bill from the county for use of county fields for the 2018 season.
"We knew that we were going to have to make painful choices. We're in a fiscal crisis. We have to tighten our belt and, as I said from the beginning, it's going to be painful," Curran told News 12.
She points out that these are not new fees. She says they are permit fees for various nonprofit organizations like Boy Scouts, veterans groups and Little Leagues that were waived by the prior parks commissioner for the past several years.
The administration says that the amount of permit fees waived in 2017 totaled approximately $596,799.
"These waivers have gotten out of control and it's my job to rein them in," said Curran.
The president of the Seaford Little League says that teams play 25 percent of their games on county fields. The league has decided it will not be playing any games on county fields. It is now looking to play all its games on town fields. It is hoping Curran will reverse the decision.
