A Vermont couple?s dream of sailing to Florida on a homemade boat was destroyed when they got caught in rough waters off the New Jersey coast.
Jessica Kopecky and Colin Cote started their journey in Vermont. They were sailing around Sandy Hook to get onto the Intracoastal Waterway when they unexpectedly hit rough waters. Cote says the vessel, made of balsa wood, fiberglass and resin, was powered by a small motor that propelled the boat at about 4 miles per hour.
The couple carried 2,000 pounds of supplies on the 29-foot boat because they planned to be traveling for months.
The Coast Guard, which rescued the couple, says the boat was ?un-seaworthy.? Coast Guard officials say the boat capsized and broke into pieces as they towed it.
The boat was named ?The Inconvenient Truth.? The Red Cross is helping the couple because they lost their possessions on the boat.
