Corzine willing to lose job for toll road lease plan
Gov. Jon Corzine announced Thursday he is willing to lose his job over a plan to lease out New Jersey?s toll roads.
At the League of Municipalities Convention in Atlantic City, Corzine explained his plan to a crowd of municipal officials.
?Make no mistake, I am willing to risk my job if that?s necessary to set our fiscal house in order and get New Jersey out from the debt burden constraining our future,? Corzine said.
Corzine stressed that his plan is to lease the roads, not sell them. According to Corzine, his plan would cut the state?s bond debt in half. It would include permanent funding for the state?s Transportation Trust Fund and put new limits on state borrowing.
Corzine said supporting plans such as leasing toll roads may not be popular, but it is the right thing to do.
The specifics of the plan will be outlined during Corzine?s State of the State address next year. After that, Corzine plans to meet with the public at town meetings in all 21 counties to explain the proposal.
