Corzine budget plan gets mixed responses
Gov. Corzine will give his budget address Tuesday, and Sunday's published reports claim that the governor could cut up to 5,000 state jobs and three departments.
Specifics of Corzine's plan have not been released, but there is talk that in addition to cutting thousands of state jobs, the governor will also propose about $2.5 billion in spending cuts.
The budget plan may also include eliminating property tax rebates, which will affect many due to New Jersey?s high property taxes. However, some residents say they?ll stand by their governor regardless of what his budget plan will be.
?Of course I would like to have the check come in the mail,? Jefferson Township resident Susan Puglisi says. ?But I?d like to understand that [Corzine] knows what he?s doing better than I do.?
The state could also see funding cuts for museums, theatres, hospitals, welfare recipients and municipalities. Some New Jersey residents say they don?t like the sound of that but will wait to hear the address before passing judgment.
?It doesn?t sound safe, it doesn?t sound good,? Sparta resident Mark Breckenridge says. ?But then again, I don?t know the details either.?
The state is spending $33.5 billion this fiscal year, which starts July 1, and Corzine says he will not spend anything over that amount.
