Tourism all throughout Atlantic City is being impacted by the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak.
“The last 24 hours worldwide has been unthinkable,” says Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small.
The city has canceled many major events, including the city’s St. Patricks’ Day parade and the MAAC men’s and women’s basketball championships.
“We went home thinking we were going to come back today and watch basketball all day and took the day off, so it’s kind of a bummer,” says Atlantic City resident Mike Lopez. “But you understand what’s going on.”
Atlantic City’s casinos are also taking a hit as hotel guests cancel rooms booked for the weekend. But the casinos will remain open for now.
“I’ve seen some people wiping down the railings and the machines,” says Dan Kelly of Massachusetts.
A spokesperson for the Casino Association of New Jersey says in a statement, "Atlantic City casinos are proactively installing various hand sanitation stations throughout our properties, frequently sanitizing high-traffic areas, and have implemented a return-to-work process for employees traveling in affected areas."
The casinos are not the only ones taking precautions. Atlantic City tourists say that they are avoiding things like buffets, and are even taking sanitizing into their own hands.
“We brought our wipes and wipe down everything in our room, whether it was clean or not. We wiped them all down and just washing your hands like it always should be,” says Tease Could of Asbury Park.
City-sponsored events will continue to be canceled for the foreseeable future. Large events put on by the casinos, however, will be up to each individual company.
Gov. Phil Murphy has recommended that all public gatherings of 250 or more people be postponed.
