There is a controversy brewing over a craft beer establishment that wishes to open in Morristown.
The owners of Glennbrook Brewery want to open a tasting room in an old plumbing business on Abbet Avenue in the town, which sits across from George Gramby Memorial Park.
But neighbors and the town mayor say that this goes against everything for which the park stands. The park is named for George Gramby, the man who helped those with substance abuse in the community for decades.
"It goes against everything George fought for, what we stand for,” says Stan Prater.  “I'm on the committee. I believe it's a negative impact in our community."
The brewery co-owners say that their intent is for the establishment to be a place for people to come and sample their beers. They say that people will only stay for a short time and maybe take a beer to go. They say that it is not intended to be a sports bar.
“There’s no seats at the serving area,” says co-owner Darren Cregen.
But Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty says that he still has his concerns.
“You're going to have people out sampling beers and drinking and enjoying the microbrewery and it's in a neighborhood so neighbors are going to have to deal with people in their neighborhood late at night,” the mayor says.
Cregen says that these concerns are unfounded.
“A lot of people have questions about drunk people walking through their yards, drunk people urinating in public. That's just not typical beer behavior of craft beer drinkers,” he says.
Other concerns addressed include parking, hours of operation and safety. The issued is expected to be discussed again at next town zoning meeting.
