Consumer Alert: Jeep Cherokee transmission issues
Fiat Chrysler is getting a lot of complaints about the transmissions in its Jeep Cherokee SUV.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that there were nearly 700 complaints about the powertrains on the 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokees. Many of the complaints are about transmissions that stall, shift roughly, or fail all together.
Automotive attorney Bob Silverman says that he credits Fiat Chrysler for repeatedly making free repairs under its warranty, but says in some cases, there just may not be a permanent solution.
"They've had multiple recalls, multiple software updates, and transmission replacements. I've even seen them put 2016 transmissions in 2014 and 2015 vehicles, they just can't fix the problem," he says.
A spokesperson for Fiat Chrysler tells News 12 New Jersey that not all of those complaints on the NHTSA database have been verified, and says that some may not be accurate.
The spokesperson says in a statement, "We have introduced several powertrain software and hardware refinements since the nine-speed transmission was first introduced," and adds, "customers should check with their local dealerships to determine if any updates are appropriate for their specific vehicle."
Kane In Your Corner recommends that anyone who has problems with a new vehicle keep track of each repair under the vehicle's warranty. New Jersey's Lemon Law may apply if the problem exists.
