(AP) - The mayor of a working-class city inConnecticut roiled by allegations of police discrimination againstHispanics is facing scathing criticism from officials for saying he"might have tacos" as a way to do something for the community.
The comments by East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo are bringingunwanted attention to the leadership of the New Haven suburb, wherefour police officers were arrested Tuesday by the FBI on chargesincluding deprivation of rights and obstruction of justice. Themayor is also being criticized for his recent reappointment ofpolice Chief Leonard Gallo, who was referred to in the indictmentas a co-conspirator.
The four officers are accused of waging a campaign of harassmentagainst Latino residents and businesses, including assaultinghandcuffed people. All four have pleaded not guilty.
